Draft v0.3 -- June 2007 Update (cbeard@mozilla.org)
The Firefox product release roadmap aims to enable innovative web experiences for
consumers,
accelerate the time-to-market for user-facing innovation, and improve the security and
stability of our products.
Note: This roadmap is intended as a conceptual view only -- to indicate the
relationship
between product and platform releases and their relative timing and support policies.
(Detailed technical roadmap with
branch mechanics to follow.)
The roadmap provides for:
- Platform releases every 12 to 18 months and product releases every 9 to 12 months with
product releases between platform releases limited to new features and enhancements with
minimal back-end impact, e.g. API additions to the platform but no incompatible
changes.
- A consumer focused support lifecycle where only the current plus the last
major release at any given time would be supported with security and stability updates for
up to six months following general availability of the current release. We'll work with
downstream enterprise-oriented distributors and support vendors to provide a program to
enable extended support for otherwise legacy releases.
- Scheduled security and stability updates every 6 to 8 weeks to provide a vehicle to
address security and stability issues with critical security vulnerabilities addressed "out
of band," unencumbered by other patches
- Transition to Mozilla 2 starting mid-2007 with Gecko branches supported for six months following subsequent major releases. e.g. 1.8.1 will be supported for 6
months following the release of 1.9.0, 1.9.0 will be supported for 6 months following the release of 1.9.1, etc.
- Firefox 4 planned as first product release off of the Mozilla 2 platform.
